UPDATE 2 - 12/30/16: Ok, the rank tiers for matchmaking now groups level 21 players with level 60+?? This is worse than before! Higher level players have a distinct advantage since they have perks and weapons that are locked for lower level players. Im not afraid of a challenge but this is too far of a stretch. Coming in next to last for every DM game results in earning a severely diminished amount of experience points and it makes leveling up an unreasonably long process while making it much easier for higher ranking players to level up (albeit they need more exp. points per rank to level up). Basically, its not worth my time to keep playing a game when it would take years before I would be at the point where I could realistically compete with others in the server. Lowering rating to 1 star since this issue essentially renders the game useless to me.
UPDATE 12/25/16: It seems that Madfinger also felt the same way I did about how the game could be improved since the most recent update happened to address almost all of my concerns. Therefore, Im raising my rating from 3/5 stars to 5/5 stars, I think it is deserved.
One new issue is it seems the layout no longer properly fits iPhone 6/7 screens (I dont know about "plus" screen sizes), the menu screens seem to be slightly too large to fit the screen and doesnt resize properly. But it doesnt seem to effect game play and I bet the devs will address this after the holidays.
- The game play is smoother now.
- New death match maps added although I still havent seen them yet.
- Hit registration does seem to be improved.
- Better matchmaking!! It seems the match making by Rank tier structure has been narrowed down - no more DM games that have Rank 15 players facing Rank 30 players.
Old Review:
This game has a lot going for it but suffers in some major ways.
First, the good:
- very good graphics considering the fast paced multiplayer action on a mobile device. Could they be better? Sure, but it would consume more resources without making the game any more enjoyable. Personally, I like that the graphics remind me of older FPS like Quake and Unreal (it does use the Unreal engine)
- the gameplay is simple: kill, kill, kill!
- it is Free to Play and pay to win really wont help you here. You can buy gold which allows you to buy better guns but if you lack skill then you will still get slaughtered. You can buy into the Premium Version which doubles your earned XP and cash but that still wont make up for the fact that earning XP and cash faster doesnt equate to gaining skill any faster.
- Always people playing, never takes me long to get assigned to a server. Servers always seem to have plenty of people.
- The Deathmatch maps are large and detailed. Rarely is it an issue where you span too close to another player.
The Bad:
- match making groups by player rank; 1-15, 16-30, after that I cant say for sure since I am level 17. Playing Rank 1-15 seemed to be OK even when you are an inexperienced low ranking player, matches end up pretty even. But matching people ranked 16 with rank 30 seems to be too big of a gap. Maybe there isnt enough people to have the rank range decreased to 10 levels instead of 15 but it takes a lot more experience points and time to get to rank 30 from 16 than it does to get to rank 15 from 1, so the skill level divide is so much greater that it diminishes the fun.
- The game offers match making by geolocation which is really nice but it seems to ignore people with poor connections. Someone could be next door and if they have a slow connection then they might as well be on the other side of the world. You shoot them and they lag all over the place. It is really annoying and it ruins the dynamic of the match really quickly. I would say at least 1-2 people per match have severe lag issues. I understand with only so many players it would be tough for the devs to find a solution that addresses the lag issue without sacrificing something else that would upset other players.
- I dont think the devs are adding anything more to the game. When I started playing this game like 2 years ago there were 4 Deathmatch maps. There are still only 4 Deathmatch maps.
Side Note:
- You will see reviews of people complaining about cheaters. I dont know if I have ever actually seen a cheater in game, I have seen level 1 players somehow miraculously win a match over much higher level players but they could just be experienced players with a new, separate account. I did that, myself. Also, people could be mistaking lag for cheating since it seems like the other players "teleport" out of the way when being shot. There might be a cheat they are using to do that but I think it is simply a lag issue, although that really doesnt make it much better for the non-laggy players.
Conclusion: The positives of this game make it stand out from any other mobile platform game. It is unique in its simplicity and action. But the few negatives bring the game down in a major way since they severely effect gameplay in general and arent simply subjective, opinion based issues like not liking the gun options or the fact that the graphics dont look like the latest console COD game. It seems there are enough players where the devs could make a few back end changes to really help these issues. I would be happy to pay $10 for this game if they did.
